The transformation of Tugun Market Co. by 77 Architecture is a striking testament to the potential dormant within aging infrastructures. Nestled in the coastal locale of Tugun, this project was not merely a renovation but a renaissance of two derelict buildings, united into a vibrant, community-centric marketplace.
The design philosophy was to celebrate the structure’s heritage, and the decision to open the ceiling to reveal the original roof trusses has proven to be central to the design. This bold move not only pays homage to the building’s past but also ushers in a modern spaciousness and airiness that elevates the shopping experience. It’s as though the building breathes anew, with the trusses forming a rhythmic overhead pattern that guides visitors through the market’s various offerings.
The new layout of Tugun Market Co. is both an architectural and communal hub, featuring a café, local butcher, artisanal fromagerie, and an array of local produce prepared fresh on-site. Each of these elements is thoughtfully positioned to create an organic flow, encouraging exploration and interaction. The infusion of natural light, enabled by the opened ceiling, highlights the fresh produce and artisanal products, invigorating the space with a warm and inviting glow.
77 Architecture’s commitment to practical elegance shines through the constraints of a limited budget and tight timeframe. The result is a marketplace that resonates with the character and charm of the original architecture while serving the functional needs of a contemporary retail space.
